The Doctor, Craig and Alfie

In the latest episode of Doctor Who, “Closing Time”, the 11th Doctor is on a farewell tour of sorts and pays a call to a friend of his named Craig Owens. As luck would have it, poor Craig is alone with the baby for the first time ever while Mummy’s on holiday and he isn’t handling it well. Luckily for him, the Doctor speaks baby. Of course, Craig ends up caught up in one of the Doctor’s adventures. (As if being left alone with the baby isn’t enough of an adventure, right??)

"You're far too slow when he summons you."

As they’re staking out a shop to track down a Cybermat, the Doctor pulls out a baby carrier (which he handily got on sale for 10% off) and hands it to Craig. “Alfie wants you attached to him. You’re far too slow when he summons you.”

LOL! The Doctor advocates babywearing Whovians, wear your babies!! Even The Doctor agrees!

I love it when geekery and real life interests coincide. And as a bonus, the Doctor holding baby Alfie. Pretty awesome scene if you ask me. The Doctor gets along well with kiddies

Wearing The Little Empress @ 27mo

I am happy to report that I’ve been toddler wearing more in the past few weeks than I have in nearly a year. There have been a few times in the past week when I’ve had to run errands with a not-fully napped TLE. Rather than wake her up and put her in a shopping cart (which has had disastrous consequences when she wants to sleep), I’ve opted to pop the still-drowsy from her car-nap TLE into a carrier and onto my back. She may wake up and be a bit confused but when she realizes she’s on my back, she relaxes and goes back to sleep.

Good lord, why haven’t I been doing this more?!

I guess TLE is now remembering how nice it is to be worn because she’s now asking to be worn rather than just waiting for me to give her the option. I am absolutely thrilled about this though now I’m debating whether nor not it is time to sell the old Pikkolo to invest in a newer carrier that is better suited for a lanky-legged toddler. Hmmm….

Hitching a ride

The Little Empress hasn’t been feeling well these past few days, sick and cranky with another ear infection. She hates being out and about when she’s sickly but we had to head out rather late in the day yesterday to pick up her medicine. I put her in the car without her shoes because I figured we’d just make a quick stop through the drive through only to discover that the drive through line was 6 cars deep. She was already cranky and I didn’t have much patience. I parked the car and eyed her. No shoes meant no walking and I really didn’t feel up to chasing after her anyway. Our Pikkolo was sitting beside her and I had a sudden flash of brilliance.

“Wanna ride on Mama’s back?” I asked.

TLE lit up and clapped her hands yes. She giggled as I strapped the carrier onto me and then hip-slid her onto her rightful place on my back. Our little trip to the drugstore was nearly painless as she happily rode on my back, playing with my hair and waving to passers by. Our next stop to the grocery store, I asked again whether she wanted the cart or Mama’s back. She pointed to the carrier and clapped again. She giggled happily as I hunted for that night’s dinner at the grocery store, sometimes pausing to lay her head on my shoulder or give me a quick hug from the back.

Oh how I’ve missed this!! I hope this just isn’t a fluke of wanting to be worn only when she’s sick. Regardless, I’ll take it. There’s nothing like a great afternoon of toddler wearing to brighten this mama’s spirits.

Infantino Recalls to Replace SlingRider Baby Slings; Three Infant Deaths Reported

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), in cooperation with Infantino LLC, of San Diego, Calif. are announcing a free replacement program for the Infantino “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellissimo” infant slings. One million of these infant slings are being recalled in the United States and 15,000 are being recalled in Canada. CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using these slings for infants younger than four months of age due to a risk of suffocation and contact Infantino for a free replacement product.

I am a huge proponent of babywearing — a carried baby is a happy baby, after all. I have seen these SlingRider slings in action and was appalled at how far a baby can fall into them. I am glad to see that they’ve been taken off the market. My only hope is that this recall will not scare folks away from babywearing.

Snug and secure

Snug

The Little Empress got her latest round of vaccinations today. Two shots in the right thigh while the medical assistant, my sister and I held her down. Poor thing! I always hate it when she gets shots, even more so now that she’s aware of what’s going on and can clearly show she’s frightened. Despite that, she did well and seemed to show no ill effects of her shots this evening.

A little past midnight, she was up and howling. She was cranky, clearly uncomfortable and HOT to the touch. It didn’t help that it was well over 80F in the bedroom, either. Daddy got her Tylenol but I didn’t remember how much I could give her so downstairs I went to get the laptop which had dosage information. My sister got up to see what was going on and prepared a sippy of cold water and a box of juice.

The poor little thing guzzled some ice cold water and then began wailing again. Then she took some juice and wailed a bit more. She was still burning up so we turned on the fan and gave her a dose of Tylenol, which she hated and immediately threw up back up She took more water and began running around the family room, tormenting the dog. For the next hour or so, she toddled about, cooling down with some water, juice and occasional boobie pit stop. Finally, she tried to nurse herself to sleep, only to find she couldn’t.

That’s when I got our summer wrap out. It has been a few months since I’ve wrapped The Little Empress to sleep. I used to wrap her onto me every night once she fell asleep, and  I’d go about and do whatever I needed to do before turning in myself. Since she’s gotten bigger, that has gotten more difficult because she’s would much rather just stretch out on my lap or a comfortable bed. But tonight, still slightly feverish and tired, she happily allowed me to wrap her up, laying her head on my shoulder and falling into a peaceful, deep slumber.

So I am sitting here, at 2:30AM with The Little Empress laying on my chest, sleeping ever so peacefully. Though I wish she wasn’t feeling unwell, I am ever so thankful for the few moments of wrapped snuggle time we’ve had. I’ve missed this so much. Sometimes, I wish I could wear her like this forever.

Fun night

I just said goodbye to some friends after spending the evening playing Rock Band 2, watching anime and YouTube finds and noshing on pizza. Fun times were had by all, including The Little Empress. She was a bit fussy at times but went down for nap and then finally for the night while being worn, allowing Mommy to play Rock Band and have fun with friends but still be close to baby. It is a testament to how well she sleeps in carriers that she didn’t wake up even when Rock Band was blasting in the background. Babywearing for the win!!
