Who am I?
My name is Michelle. I’m a mother, a blogger, a writer and a self-professed geek. As if the image above wasn’t enough of a clue, right? For those that would have their doubts about my geekishness (because, you know, it could happen) I am was an IT professional by trade for over five years. I was? am? a long time fangirl of various anime, science fiction and comic book fandoms. My own comic book collection dwarfs my husband’s by about 5x. I began to crush on the man who became my husband while he GM’ed a Star Wars RPG that we played with our friends.
If that’s not geek cred, I don’t know what is. The fact that I wrote “geek cred” with a touch of pride should put more than a little bit of shame in me. That fact that it doesn’t should worry me. But it doesn’t. (It does, however, explain a lot about why I don’t fit into your average Mommy Club.)
Our style of parenting is based heavily on Attachment Parenting principles, particularly extended breastfeeding and co-sleeping. We also practiced babywearing and I cloth diapered for a time. We try to pinch our pennies and do our best to make do or do without with moderate success. Still haven’t kicked our DVD collecting habit but found we don’t really need to.
While not particularly politically outspoken, I consider myself a left-leaning moderate. In my book, a nutjob is a nutjob no matter whether they’re blue or red. I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion whether or not I agree. I only wish that people could come to the consensus to disagree amicably.
As far as religion goes, I was raised in the Catholic Church and while I have the utmost faith in God, I am less enamored of His middle management here on Earth. I seriously think that Jesus would weep if He saw all the hate that is perpetuated in His name. I am a Christian but I currently do not affiliate myself with any church.
As a Christian, I am a minority amongst my friends whose beliefs run the gammut of Buddhism, Pagan, agnosticism and everything in between. I consider myself blessed to be surrounded by friends of other faiths and belief systems. I pray every day that God will help me be a good example of Christianity and show people that Christianity is, at its core, a religion of unconditional love.
Aside from writing and various natural parenting related things, my interests include food, photography and crafting. I recently bought a sewing machine but have yet to find some time to sit down and make something!! I also enjoy playing video games though taking care of The Little Empress has kept me from really playing anything for any prolonged (read: longer than 5 minutes) length of time.
Some random things about me:
- I <3 Coca Cola about as much as I <3 chocolate. Cherry Coke is my absolute favorite and was one of the first things I asked for after delivering The Little Empress. (I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy and couldn’t eat sugar!)
- Oreos are a cookie that I just can’t seem to keep off of my grocery list. Ditto with Pims.
- I took five years of science in high school.
- I met my favorite manga author when I was 19. I was so star struck that I forgot how to say ‘manga’ in Japanese. Yes, I am that lame.
- Luke Skywalker was my first crush. I was five and fell in love with him watching Return of the Jedi for the first time.
- I hate the Star Wars prequels. In the words of Tim from Spaced (UK), “It still hurts, Bilbo.”
- I am not a fan of hobbits. Ick.
- My idea of relaxation includes a plate of tea sandwiches, scones, hot Earl Grey tea and some relaxing music. I haven’t been able to do this since well before The Little Empress was born.
- I am perfectly fine delivering public speeches but have a fear of talking one-to-one with people.
- My favorite fruit is a toss up between cherries or watermelon.
