Pre-NaNoWriMo Thoughts

Yes, yes, I’m ridiculously excited about this year’s NaNoWriMo. Why? Partly because it is the first year that I’m competing in NaNoWriMo as an actual writer — as in, my business cards proclaim I am a writer therefore it must be trueas well as the fact that this is the first year that I’m actually preparing for the damned thing instead of waiting until October 30th and going, “Huh… NaNo’s up in a day or so. Should I participate?”

Of course, folks have their reservations and criticisms about NaNoWriMo. The most common of these would be that 50,000 words worth of crap writing does not a novel make. Plus, I seriously question anyone who would think that what they have as of November 30 at 11:59PM to be their finished masterpiece, ready to be bundled off and sent as manuscripts to various publishing houses.

So why look forward to it?

For me, it is a nice kick in the pants. I am one of the lucky ones who can dedicate whatever free time I have this year to the project, something I just did not have before. The story I’m choosing to write this year is one that is near and dear to my heart, part of a huge universe which has been under development for the better part of 4 years. So yes, I am excited to finally, after all this time and planning, challenge myself to write something in the hopes of having it ready to shop to agents or publishers by Q2 of next year.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this. I just can’t wait!!

Gearing up for NaNoWriMo 2009

Woohoo!! I am insanely excited for November because I will be participating in this year’s National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) contest. For those who don’t know what it is, a bunch of people all around the world challenge themselves to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days or less. That’s a word count of about 1,667 words per day. (My fingers are aching just thinking about it!)

I’ve been doubling up on my paying writing work to clear the way to dedicate myself to writing ONLY fiction for the month of November. Those interested can follow my would-be novelist exploits on my Twitter @MichelleMNguyen. :)

The H1N1 *headesk* post

Well, it looks like the current Big Issue ™ is whether or not to get your child vaccinated against the H1N1 flu. I’m honestly really surprised at the number of parents who are so vehemently against their child getting the H1N1 vaccine, even if they’re not staunchly anti-vaccination. And then I’m more confused when reading discussions about it that it seems like the same parents who are anti-H1N1 vaccination are also the same folks who are paranoid about their child getting sick with H1N1.

“I don’t want my kid catching H1N1 yet I refuse to get them the very vaccination that my prevent it.” Does that line of thinking make sense to you? It doesn’t to me.

For what it’s worth, I think it is in every parents’ nature to be wary of anything that is being put into their child. It is a parents’ job to advocate for their children when they are too small to do so for themselves.

That being said, will The Little Empress receive the H1N1 vaccine? I don’t know — I’ll be asking her doctor what he thinks and then making a judgment call. At the moment, I’m leaning towards yes because while I don’t think that H1N1 is the Killer Flu that everyone seems to be afraid it is (THANKS MEDIA HYPE), it does sound pretty nasty and if I can spare TLE the misery of being sick, why not?

And another thing that just doesn’t make sense to me — parents that carry around anti-bacterials everywhere to “guard against the cold and the flu.” Buh? Hello — the cold and flu are caused by VIRUSES. Anti-bacterial gel won’t stop a virus. Just saying.

Happy Friday

Riding the Google Wave

Hooray!! I’m part of the Google Wave preview. I lucked out and ended up getting a Google Wave invite from a friend of mine who happens to work at Google. (THANKS ED!!)

Google Wave

Google Wave

TRIVIA: Did you know that the term “wave” was inspired by Joss Whedon’s Firefly? Oh so nifty and so extraordinarily geekarific! Gotta love those crazy cats at Google.

I first heard about Google Wave through Daynah (on Twitter @Daynah) who is the gal behind PHP-Princess. I have been excited about this product ever since I read her tweets about it.

So far, I am digging the interface though am sort of at a loss since I don’t (currently) have any contacts who I can wave with. Hopefully that will change soon. :)
